USW historian Norry LaPorte will be speaking next week on the World War One experience of Ernst Thälmann, the leader of German communism in the 1930s, in a seminar at the March bloch Centre in Berlin: The Red Inheritance from the Front: the First World War as Front Experience for Communists.

Friendly Enemies: Britain and the GDR, 1949-1990, the ground-breaking study of relations between Britain and the former East Germany by USW historian Norry LaPorte and ex-USW professor Stefan Berger is to be issued in a paperback edition by Berghahn Press.

USW historian Norry LaPorte has been awarded a grant of £5,800 by The Barry Amiel & Norman Melburn Trust, which supports research into the history of socialism and the working-class movement.
The grant is to support the publication of Weimar Communism as Mass Movement, a book that will showcase a new generation of researchers working on interwar communism in Germany whose work has yet to appear in English.
